There are some *.reg files you can download from Microsoft’s website to fix this problem. Microsoft said the reason for this was older versions were not as secure as the current versions of the Office suite. The *.reg files are available here. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938810#appliesto

Stop iPod Auto Sync:
If you use your iPod as an external hard drive, then you’ve probably experianced the situation where you need to quickly get a file off of your iPod and your iPod wants to sync. (While you can do both at the same time, you can’t easily eject your iPod while it’s syncing.) If you know that this situation will happen, then there’s an easy way to bypass your iPod’s automatic syncing: hold Cmd-Option when you plug the iPod in. iTunes will still open and your iPod’s HD will still appear, but your iPod will not sync.
